CÀI Kitchen, Berlin
Vegan Sichuan spiciness in the city
June 2023
If you are looking for the distinctly spicy flavours of Sichuan in Berlin, look no further than CÀI Kitchen. This cool and colourful bistro sits at the Mitte end of Schönhauser Allee and serves up only the finest vegan versions of the eye-watering, nose-tingling dishes of the famed Chinese province.
If spiciness is not your thing, you can go for the mild mixed rice bowl and the potato dumpling which have just a touch of spice. But: Sichuan cuisine is known for being spicy, and there is plenty to tempt your palate here. Entry-level spicy top tip has to be the dan dan art noodle bowl topped with vegan mince (available in a small or large portion) paired with the polenta in a fermented soybean sauce.
Moving up the scale, you might want to try the sweet potato glass noodles with silken tofu with a side of veggie dumplings in a Sichuan pepper sauce. And if you are ready to have the full-blown tongue-nipping Sichuan experience, order the marinated udon noodles in the extra spicy peanut sauce AND the spicy dumplings washed down with a refreshing Fritz cola.
Whatever your preference, CÀI Kitchen has you covered in their casual dining environment and outdoor seating area. Lunch times can be quite packed, so try to get there early to avoid waiting.
CÀI Kitchen, Schönhauser Allee 177A, 10119 Berlin. Open Monday 12–15, Tuesday–Friday
12–15 and 18–21, Saturday 16–21, Sunday closed. Instagram: @caikitchenbln
