FRIEDL, Berlin

Quality coffee roastery and vegan cookies

June 2023

For one of the finest independent coffee roasters in Berlin, check out Friedl in the city’s Prenzlauer Berg area. While it may not be one of the big name roasteries that people flock to, this family-run business prioritises quality and a causal coffee experience over fancy logos and interior.

Occupying a small spot near the intersection of Pappelallee and Stargarderstraße, this café offers a unique mixture of fine coffee drinks, a simple yet tasteful aesthetic and amazing value for money when it comes to pricing. There are no indoor seating options; instead you can find a spot on the outside benches which offer great people-watching opportunities and a distinctly Berlin view of the passing trams and colourful building exteriors.

When ordering your espresso-based drink of choice, you might have a tough decision when asked to make your bean selection. The menu board has a numbered list of up to eight ethically sourced coffee bean varieties: from the mild and nutty Brazilian to the light, fruity and spicy Ethiopian, and the chocolatey Blend 3, your preferred taste is sure to be catered to.

As well as the coffee beans to purchase to make at home, Friedl also has a nice selection of baked goods, including the vegan double chocolate cookie and peanut cookie. All drinks can be made from vegan oat milk and this is also one of the few cafés in Berlin that know how to make a decent iced coffee. If you are looking for a takeaway drink, remember to bring your own tumbler or use the deposit-return ReCup as Friedl proudly offers no single-use cups.
