Ferments, Seoul
Fermented-based vegan cuisine and drinks in a lesser-known hip area
June 2023
Nestled in the urban jungle and getting-hip area near “용리단길” next to Yongsan station is another of Seoul’s newest and finest vegan restaurants, Ferments. The streets are lined with low, colourful buildings to the backdrop to some of the city’s newest skyscrapers. Former industrial workshops give way to chic cafes, and hanok houses are now serving queues of people their modern take on traditional Korean cuisine.
But at Ferments, something new is on offer: fermented vegetable-based vegan dishes and drinks. All the menu items contain fermented ingredients of some kind (including fermented sauces, salsa, curry mayo, and dressing) and their kombuchas are nicely refreshing and beautifully branded. If you like a little whiskey with your kombucha, their highballs will certainly be for you.
From the outside the space might seem small, but once you’re in and through the bright entrance, the restaurant opens up to reveal a soaring roof, high windows, a record-lined wall, giant mirro, and a staircase leading the beautiful outdoor terrace. The menu consists of a botanical salad, falafel burger, tomato or mushroom pasta, curry, ramen, and some delicious sides of Jerusalem artichoke (한국말로 “돼지 감자”) or cauliflower fries!
Ferments is pet-friendly (they have there own fluffy friend there to greet you), the staff are calm and welcoming, and the space is also home to a monthly DJ party so you can eat, drink, and dance in this new vegan hotspot.
Ferments, Seoul, Yongsan-gu, Hangang-daero 7-gil, 22. Open Monday–Thursday and Sunday 12–23, Friday/Saturday 12–24.
